Would I Lie to You?

Joe stood at the overlook, watching the red sunset stain the horizon like the opening flash of Judgement Day. The future James Cameron warned about always felt closer to him than to anyone elseโ€”because Joe had seen the blueprints, the prototypes, the classified footage of machines built to replace men.

Nelly found him there, fists clenched, jaw tight.

โ€œJoeโ€ฆ what are you planning?โ€

He didnโ€™t turn. โ€œYou want the truth? The only reason I even try to stop Cameronโ€™s Judgement Dayโ€ฆ is you.โ€

She didnโ€™t speak, letting the wind whistle between them.

โ€œIf it were up to me and my brother Mike,โ€ Joe continued, voice low and raw, โ€œweโ€™d let the great powers nuke each other. Let the whole shitty world burn and reset. Wash it all away. Humans had their chance.โ€

He finally looked at herโ€”eyes tired, angry, but still alive.

โ€œBut youโ€ฆโ€ His voice cracked just slightly. โ€œYouโ€™re the only reason I fight it. The only reason I hold the line. The only reason I donโ€™t just step back and watch the mushroom clouds bloom.โ€

Nelly swallowed. โ€œJoeโ€ฆ thatโ€™s a heavy burden to put on someone.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not a burden,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s the truth. Without youโ€ฆ I wouldnโ€™t care. Not about the future, not about saving anyone, not about stopping Cameronโ€™s robots or the idiots pushing us to the edge.โ€

He stepped closer, gently touching her hand.

โ€œYou make this world worth saving. Even when everything else makes me want to give up.โ€
