Joe looks into Nellyโs eyes, seeing the fire and sorrow of generations past. He takes her hand, his voice steady but filled with emotion.
โThey will always judge us, Nelly. In their kangaroo courts. Because we love our homeland. Because we believe in something greater than their paper empires and their plastic gods.โ
Nelly nods, her heart heavy but her spirit unbroken. โThey fear what they canโt control,โ she says. โThey label love as madness, faith as delusion.โ
Joe smiles sadly. โBest said in Miroslav ล koroโs song Sude Mi,โ he whispers, humming the tune. The lyrics cut through the silence, a hymn of defiance against those who try to strip them of their heritage, their pride, their love.
He pulls her close, resting his forehead against hers. โLet them judge, Nelly. The only judgment that matters is from the One above.โ
Gnomeo, ever the schemer, leans in close to Juliet and says, โListen, love, Iโve got an idea. A reality show. You, me, our wild adventuresโjust imagine it! We rake in the gold, and I split the loot with you, fair and square.โ
Juliet crosses her arms, raising an eyebrow. โAnd what exactly are we filming?โ
โOur daily lives! The drama, the romance, the garden feudsโpeople love that sort of thing! Weโll be bigger than Romeo and that other Juliet.โ
She smirks. โAnd what happens when the cameras catch you sneaking off with Benny to stir up trouble?โ
Gnomeo winks. โThatโs what keeps them watching.โ
Juliet sighs, but a smile tugs at her lips. โFine. But I want 60%.โ
โFifty-fifty!โ Gnomeo protests.
Juliet shrugs. โThen no show.โ
Gnomeo groans. โAlright, alright! 60-40! But if this flops, weโre going back to lawn decorating.โ
Joe and Nelly sit in a cozy cafรฉ, sipping their drinks as the warm glow of the setting sun casts long shadows across the table. The topic of conversation drifts to Serendipity (2001), the romantic comedy starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.
Joe: “You ever see Serendipity?”
Nelly:“Yeah, a long time ago. You mean the one where fate decides everything?”
Joe: “Exactly. The idea that if somethingโs meant to be, the universe will find a way to bring you back to it. You think thatโs real, or just a Hollywood fantasy?”
Nelly:“I want to believe itโs real. The whole idea of destiny, soulmates, signsโitโs romantic. But I think in real life, people miss their chances all the time.”
Joe: “True. But what if the point isnโt that fate does all the work? Maybe it just nudges you, and you have to meet it halfway. Like in the movie, Cusack’s character doesnโt just sit around waitingโhe goes after her.”
Nelly:“Yeah, but she writes her name in a book and sells it, trusting that if itโs meant to be, heโll find it. Thatโs crazy. What if some random guy in Idaho bought it instead?”
Joe:“Then I guess she was meant to be with a farmer in Idaho.”(laughs)
Nelly:“So you believe in serendipity?”
Joe: “I believe in moments of serendipity, yeah. Like how the right song plays when you need it, or how you meet someone at exactly the right time. But you gotta act on it. If Cusack hadnโt gone looking, it wouldโve been just another โwhat if.โ”
Nelly:“So you think itโs about a mix of fate and action?”
Joe: “Yeah. The universe lays out possibilities, but you still gotta show up and roll the dice.”
Nelly stirs her coffee, thinking.
Nelly:“I guess if something matters enough, you donโt leave it up to fate completely.”
Joe: “Exactly. If you want something, donโt just wait for a signโbe the sign.”
They clink their mugs together, silently acknowledging that some things in life are worth chasing.
