Sycophants Out Looking to Get Paid

Joe leaned in, his voice tighter this time, carrying a sense of urgency.

โ€œThey call us crazy,โ€ he said, โ€œbut look around, Nellyโ€ฆ World War 3 is starting to take shape, and nobody wants to say it out loud.โ€

Nelly frowned, searching his face. โ€œThatโ€™s a big claim, Joe.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ he replied, โ€œand the people laughing at it? Half of them donโ€™t even believe what theyโ€™re saying. They just repeat whatever keeps them safe, whatever keeps the money flowing. Sycophants. Theyโ€™d rather play along than face whatโ€™s coming.โ€

Nelly crossed her arms. โ€œSo you think they see it too?โ€

โ€œSome of them do,โ€ Joe said. โ€œBut admitting it means riskโ€”losing status, losing comfort. Itโ€™s easier to call us crazy than to admit the worldโ€™s shifting under their feet.โ€

She was quiet for a moment. โ€œAnd us?โ€

Joe exhaled slowly. โ€œWeโ€™re the ones willing to say it, even if it sounds insane. Iโ€™d rather be wrong and honest than right and silent.โ€

Nelly shook her head, half-smiling, half-worried. โ€œThat kind of thinking gets people in trouble.โ€

Joe nodded. โ€œMaybe. But pretending everythingโ€™s fine when itโ€™s notโ€ฆ thatโ€™s how people get blindsided.โ€

Yugo Joe Forgives Miguel Neves

Yes you were right Miguel: YUGOSLAVIA $UCKS

Joe Jukic leans across the table, shaking his head like heโ€™s remembering a war story.

โ€œListen, Miguel,โ€ he says, tapping the surface for emphasis, โ€œthat Yugo wasnโ€™t just cheapโ€”it was engineered to test your patience. Youโ€™d buy it once, but youโ€™d pay for it a hundred times after.โ€

Miguel Neves raises an eyebrow. โ€œYou really think Josip Broz Tito planned that?โ€

Joe smirks. โ€œPlanned? Maybe not like some mastermind villain. But the system? It didnโ€™t exactly reward perfection. You had factories like Zastava Automobiles pumping these things out fast and cheap. Quality control? Letโ€™s just say it wasnโ€™t the top priority.โ€

Miguel chuckles. โ€œI heard they break down just looking at a hill.โ€

โ€œExactly!โ€ Joe snaps. โ€œYouโ€™d hit the gas, and the car would start negotiating with you. โ€˜Are we really doing this today?โ€™ Meanwhile, mechanics are rubbing their hands together like itโ€™s Christmas morning.โ€

He leans back, grinning.

โ€œBut hey, Iโ€™ll give it thisโ€”it got people from A to Bโ€ฆ eventually. And if you made it there without something falling off, you felt like you won something.โ€

Adopting a Rwandan Orphan

Joe sat quietly for a moment, watching herโ€”not with pity, not with worry, but with something steadier.

โ€œNelly,โ€ he said softly, โ€œyou know why I love you?โ€

She smirked a little, brushing it off. โ€œBecause Iโ€™m charming, obviously.โ€

He shook his head. โ€œNo. Because youโ€™re fearless.โ€

That made her pause.

He leaned forward. โ€œMost people spend their whole lives running from death. Hiding from it. Pretending itโ€™s not there.โ€ He tapped his chest lightly. โ€œBut youโ€ฆ you met it early. Cystic Fibrosis didnโ€™t let you pretend.โ€

She looked away, quieter now.

โ€œIt shouldโ€™ve broken you,โ€ Joe continued. โ€œMade you small. Careful. Afraid to live too much.โ€

He smiled faintly.

โ€œBut it did the opposite.โ€

Nelly let out a breath, her voice barely above a whisper. โ€œI just didnโ€™t want to waste time.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ he said. โ€œThatโ€™s the silver lining. You donโ€™t fear the endโ€”so you actually live. You take risks. You speak your mind. You love hard.โ€

He paused, then added:

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s rare. Thatโ€™s why I love you.โ€

She looked back at him, eyes sharper now, but warmer too.

โ€œYou make it sound like a gift.โ€

Joe shrugged. โ€œNot the illness. Never that. But what you became because of it?โ€ He nodded. โ€œThatโ€™s something most people never earn.โ€

A small smile crept onto her face.

โ€œFearless, huh?โ€

Joe grinned. โ€œFearlessโ€ฆ and stubborn. Donโ€™t forget that.โ€

She laughed, nudging him.

And for a moment, the shadow of illness didnโ€™t define her storyโ€”only the fire it had forged inside her.
