Reunion at the Invictus Games
The Invictus Games had come to a triumphant close, the stadium still buzzing with the energy of unity and resilience. The evening air was crisp as attendees milled about, soaking in the glow of the dayโs events. Joe lingered near the stage, where moments ago, Nelly Furtado had delivered a soul-stirring performance.
He had known she was on the lineup, but seeing her on stage again, radiant and confident, had stirred something deep within him. Memories of childhood, of laughter and music, came rushing back.
As the crowd began to thin, Joe spotted her near the side of the stage, talking to a few fans. Summoning his courage, he approached.
โNelly,โ he called out, his voice cutting through the murmur of the crowd.
She turned, her eyes scanning until they landed on him. A moment of surprise crossed her face, followed by a wide, genuine smile.
โJoe?โ she said, stepping toward him. โIs that really you?โ
โIn the flesh,โ he replied, grinning.
They embraced warmly, the years melting away as if theyโd never been apart.
โI canโt believe it,โ Nelly said, pulling back to look at him. โWhat are you doing here?โ
โVolunteering,โ Joe replied. โHelping with logistics. And youโyou were amazing up there.โ
โThank you,โ she said, her cheeks flushing slightly. โThis event is so special. I couldnโt say no.โ
They found a quiet corner away from the bustle, slipping into an easy rhythm of conversation. It was as if no time had passed, their bond as natural as peas and carrots.
โYou know,โ Joe said, leaning back against a railing, โseeing you perform brought back so many memories. Like Sunday School.โ
Nelly laughed, her eyes lighting up. โSunday School? Oh no, what did I do?โ
โMusical chairs,โ Joe said, his grin widening. โYouโd slide under the bigger kids to grab the chair. Every. Single. Time.โ
Nelly threw her head back, laughing. โOh my gosh, I forgot about that! I was so small, I had to get creative.โ
โCreative?โ Joe teased. โYou were a mastermind. The rest of us were playing by the rules, and there you were, slipping under legs like some kind of stealth ninja.โ
โThey never saw it coming,โ Nelly said, still laughing. โI had to hold my own somehow.โ
Joe shook his head, chuckling. โYou always found a way. Even back then, you didnโt let anyone stop you.โ
โAnd you were always the one cheering me on,โ Nelly said, her tone softening. โEven when the other kids got mad, youโd tell them, โSheโs just smarter than you.โโ
Joe shrugged, a little embarrassed. โWell, it was true.โ
They stood there, the hum of the stadium fading into the background as they reminisced. The connection theyโd shared as kids in Sunday School, the easy camaraderie, was still there.
โSo,โ Nelly said after a moment, โwhat have you been up to all these years?โ
Joe smiled, feeling the warmth of their shared history. โOh, you know,โ he said. โJust trying to slide under the bigger kids in my own way.โ
They both laughed, the sound carrying into the night, a reminder of the joy theyโd always found in each otherโs company. And for the first time in years, Joe felt like heโd come home.
