Our Lady’s Message

Joe speaks quietly to Nelly, almost like heโ€™s thinking out loud about Europeโ€™s future.

โ€œLook, Nelly,โ€ Joe says, โ€œpeople always argue about what Medjugorje means. Some say the message is only prayer and fasting. But I think itโ€™s bigger than that. Europe is falling into a demographic abyss. Churches are empty, villages are aging, and the next generation is disappearing.โ€

He gestures toward the horizon.

โ€œOur Lady appeared there in a small village in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the message could be for all of Europe. Maybe the renewal starts with faith again. Maybe priests and nuns shouldnโ€™t just guard the old traditions โ€” maybe they should help lead people back to life, to family, to children.โ€

Nelly raises an eyebrow.

Joe continues:

โ€œIโ€™m not saying change the Church overnight. But look at history. Even Pope John Paul II always talked about the โ€˜culture of life.โ€™ Europe canโ€™t survive if nobody is born anymore. Faith communities used to build families, villages, and entire civilizations.โ€

He smiles slightly.

โ€œMaybe the message from Medjugorje is simple: prayer, hopeโ€ฆ and the courage to rebuild a future. Otherwise Europe turns into a museum.โ€

Nelly thinks for a moment.

โ€œSo youโ€™re saying,โ€ she replies, โ€œOur Lady isnโ€™t just calling people to prayโ€ฆ sheโ€™s calling them to rebuild civilization?โ€

Joe nods.

โ€œExactly. Out of the demographic abyss.โ€ ๐ŸŒโœจ

โ€œJoe, you know something?โ€ she says. โ€œIf that were possible, Iโ€™d sign up tomorrow.โ€

Joe looks confused.

โ€œA nun?โ€ he asks.

Nelly nods.

โ€œYes. I mean it. I love the idea of devotion, community, prayerโ€ฆ all of that. The beauty of the Church. But Iโ€™m also a woman. I would want a family too.โ€

She pauses for a moment.

โ€œYouโ€™re talking about saving Europe from a demographic winter. Well, how can that happen if the most devoted women in the Church are asked to give up motherhood?โ€

Joe thinks about it.

Nelly continues:

โ€œIf I could be a nun and still have a husband and childrenโ€”serve God and raise a familyโ€”I would do it. That would be a powerful example for people. Faith wouldnโ€™t look like renouncing lifeโ€ฆ it would look like embracing it.โ€

Joe nods slowly.

โ€œYou know,โ€ he says, โ€œthat sounds a little like the early Christians.โ€

Nelly smiles.

โ€œExactly. People forget that. The Church wasnโ€™t always organized the way it is now.โ€

She glances toward the hills.

โ€œMaybe the message of Medjugorje is simply reminding people that faith should bring life back into the world.โ€

Joe chuckles.

โ€œSo your plan to save Europe,โ€ he says, โ€œis married nuns?โ€

Nelly shrugs playfully.

โ€œWellโ€ฆ if it works.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜„
